It's Spring in Huffman, and with warmer weather comes new landscaping tasks! We've already told you about Spring Cleanup, so now that we've gotten your lawn cleaned up, it's time to talk about maintaining it for the rest of the season (and on). We're talking mowing and so much more. But even mowing itself has more than meets the eye. So what does your property need in the way of lawn maintenance? Today, we share all the details on how to start and maintain a beautiful lawn.
How Do You Mow?
Lawn mowing is a task that everyone has done, but only a few people know how to do it right. It's not necessarily the technique that's an issue (folks' skills may vary in the pushing and riding department) but more the information that helps people to use those skills better.Your Grass is Grass, but What Kind?
Everyone thinks they know grass, and we certainly know it when we see it. After all, over eighty percent of US citizens have a lawn. But what makes a lawn a lawn?
There are over one thousand species of grass! But we call them all grass. The problem is different species have different needs.
Optimal heights and growing temperature, and nutritional requirements vary by species. A good landscaper like Cut'n Edge understands that and plans accordingly.
Seasons Change, and So Does Grass
We mow differently in the Spring than in the summer. And the first mow of the Spring is different than subsequent mows. The goal of the first mow is to remove all the dead grass that protected the grassroots during the winter. After that, we mow according to your grass requirements, never chopping off too much (which causes shock) but also not leaving it so tall it collapses. We'll follow the optimum height requirements. But once summer hits, that optimal height gets higher. That's because taller grass projects it from burning. Then, once fall hits, we can cut the grass shorter again, and for the last mow of the year, we leave enough to protect the roots during the winter, beginning the cycle anew!(Not Just) Any Way You Slice It
It's not just grass that varies. Your equipment does too. While the professional will use equipment that will last longer and work more efficiently, the number one most crucial lawn mower tip is something that everyone can do. Use a sharp blade. Lawn mower blades should be sharpened regularly. If you mow as much as we do, that's pretty often, but the general rule of thumb if you only cut a small yard is sharpen at least once per season. If you mow your lawn, can you remember the last time you sharpened or replaced your blade? Dull blades ruin the grass.Other Lawn Maintenance Tasks
Now we get to the fun part: everything else included in a good lawn maintenance routine. These tasks take a lawn from okay to gorgeous and include edging, trimming, and blowouts.
